Rumours in Ottawa

Can anyone confirm the following rumour?

I heard this weekend . . . .confirmed by an Ottawa insider, that Stephen Harper and his wife have split.

Apparently, she is dating an RCMP officer and living in a Hotel in Ottawa.

The rumour has been around for some time now.

Don't want to see any family split up but the tension on a sitting Prime Minister must be tremendous if in fact the rumour is true.

Should we even be discussing such rumours in a Blog?

Comments please.

  1. I may be old fashioned, but I do not think that Harper's marital woes should be fodder for blogs. I may not have respect for Mr. Harper as a Prime Minister because I have known some very good ones, but the nation has no business in the marital bedroom according to a man I admire.

We do not have to go into his bedroom...he provides enough material with his underachieving performance as a Prime Minister.

I might be wrong, but that is my opinion.

  2. Tedde,

This is precisely the discussion I wanted to initiate.

    Following on your comment, I believe you are referring to the following;

The state has no business in the bedrooms of the nation.
    Trudeau, Pierre Elliott

Source: PIERRE ELLIOTT TRUDEAU, Canadian minister of justice, remark to newsmen, Ottawa, Canada, December 21, 1967, as reported by The Globe and Mail, Toronto, December 22, 1967.

My inclination presently is to agree with you. Let's see what others say.

  3. Actually Donn, I was referring to that Prime Minister's comments after his wife left. Canadian media actually had some class about that sad event.

Mr. Trudeau said that he was elected, and she was not elected. Once she left the marital home on Sussex, she was no longer a public figure. I believe that his concern was more for the three boys, and the Harpers have children too. Rumor mills can get very vicious.

Now if Mr. Harper has a penchant for other women in the bedroom, he would be fair game. The public scrutiny is part and parcel of the job. Like you opened, I do not have proof in the truth of the rumor. I do not know all the issues in the marriage.

If she left the Sussex residence and is keeping a quiet lifestyle like she is doing apparently, then it is nobody's business but the Harpers.

He is fair game, but she is not.

  4. I agree with you both. I don't particularly like his politics but, unless he was doing something totally illegal, his private matters are his.

  5. Valerie,

Agree, we are not a voyeur nation, we are voyageur nation.

  6. Tedde,

Again there seems to be a Canadian consensus on this matter.

  7. Agreed ... We are liberals and liberal values respect the dignity of all people. Harper's private life should be out of bounds..... not that the conservatives were as respectful in their despicable and demeaning handling of references to the solid, healthy relationship and private life of Stephane Dion and his family.

Re the Harpers ... I am happy for the poor girl ... but that's my personal opinion, not a liberal position!

The 'bedrooms of the nation' comment had nothing to do with Trudeau's personal life. He never opened that door - even after leaving office. The 'bedrooms of the nation' was a principled comment with respect to liberal socio-cultural values and Canadian 'acceptance/tolerance' of same sex relationships, etc. It was a strong liberal declaration .... one of many admirable statements that brought clarity to the vision and values of that liberal administration.
